ULCERATIVE COLITIS:

Treating Ulcerative Colitis with Medical Marijuana

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

The Mayo Clinic describes Ulcerative Colitis as an “inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in your digestive tract.” The condition and symptoms thereof typically appear over time rather than suddenly. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for ulcerative colitis and the best treatments have been found to simply treat the symptoms of the condition.

Thankfully, ulcerative colitis has been deemed a qualifying condition for medical marijuana in Florida. If you or a loved one believe alternative forms of treatment may help you, contact an experienced medical marijuana doctor today!

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis can include, but are not limited to:

  • Diarrhea (with blood)
  • Weight Loss
  • Fatigue
  • Rectal pain
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Pain or cramping in abdomen
  • Fever
  • Constipation
  • Loose stool
  • Stunted growth in minors

Types of Ulcerative Colitis

» Ulcerative Proctitis

Inflammation generally located in the rectum. This is the most mild-form of the illness and the only sign of disease may be bleeding from the rectum.

» Proctosigmoiditis

Inflammation of not only the rectum, but also the lower end of the colon. Diarrhea, blood in stool, abdominal cramps, and constipation are common symptoms.

» Left-Sided Colitis

Inflammation throughout the rectum and the colon. Bloody stool, weight loss, cramping on the left-side, and diarrhea are all common symptoms of left-sided colitis.

» Pancolitis

Inflammation of the entire colon. Symptoms often include frequent bloody diarrhea, cramps, pain, and even significant weight loss.

» Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis

The most rare form of the condition, this form impacts the entire colon and can lead to severe pain. Symptoms also include constant diarrhea, bleeding, inability to eat, and even a fever.

Ulcerative Colitis and Medical Marijuana

The antiinflammatory properties of Cannabis and it’s active ingredients, such as CBD, may be tremendously beneficial in treating patients with ulcerative colitis. By reducing inflammation within the colon and rectum, medical marijuana may provide significant relief of the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Furthermore, medical marijuana has been known to boost appetite to help those with eating aversions due to the condition. Medical cannabis can also improve one’s mood, easing anxiety and depression associated with their illness.

Neuropathy is another condition caused by spinal stenosis. Fortunately, Neuropathy is also an approved condition for medical marijuana in Florida. Patients suffering from spinal stenosis in Florida have had great success treating their symptoms with medical marijuana.

Side Effects of Cannabis for Ulcerative Colitis

Side effects of marijuana use can include changes in:

  • Sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Memory
  • Appetite
  • Mood
  • Reaction Time
  • Paranoia

Mary, 76

Summerfield Medical Marijuana Doctor

– 6 months on medical cannabis
– Back Pain, sleeping problems

Pain kept me awake at night. I seldom got a full night’s sleep. My doctor gave me a prescription drug and it helped but when I wanted to stop using it I found I had to detox myself. I applied for the medical marijuana and pain reduced big time. Now I can relax and sleep, now I can volunteer and do all the activities I love.

Richard B., 71

Pensacola Medical Marijuana Doctor

– 2 1/2 months on medical cannabis
– PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

I’m a front line combat veteran. I was in Vietnam– July 67-68. The medical marijuana has given me some mental peace that I have not experienced in 50 years. It doesn’t take it away but it does soften the past experiences of combat.

Margaret, 89

Summerfield Medical Marijuana Doctor

– 2 months on medical cannabis
– Severe and chronic pain, arthritis

I have suffered terribly with post-herpetic neuropathy (after-shingles nerve damage), causing pain at night that is easily a 9/10 on a scale of 10, plus severe arthritis, back and leg pain. Since taking CBD tincture for two months, I have NO shingles pain during the night and, for the first time in almost 5 years, I’m getting a full night’s sleep! I also have days where I feel better all over than I have in the past 20 years! I find the results miraculous and the answer to a prayer. My quality of life has totally changed for the good.

Excerpt: “With the medical cannabis and coming off of all the narcotics and opioids, I’m able to function as more so myself these days. My pulmonary function tests have changed drastically. My diffusion capacity went from 0.14% to about 85% within the last year, so we’re hoping to get me back to work within the next year depending on how this process goes…”

Jay, 57

Pensacola Medical Marijuana Doctor

– 5 months on medical cannabis
– Severe and Chronic Pain, migraines, arthritis
– Previously treated with opioids

Off opioids. Blood sugar down. Whole body arthritis, off more pills. Multiple chronic conditions. Plants, not pills. My experiences are 100% positive; and I have regained the will, and desire, to face today….and tomorrow. NOTE: sharing my experience, not giving medical advice; each patient is different.

I have been dealing with psychiatric conditions all my life, and recently finally got it diagnosed. After trying conventional medicine for a few years, I decided to give MMJ a try.
